Techgirl's photos from Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary in Delta, B.C. These are the 5 resident cranes. They become rust coloured in the spring and through the summer, turning gray come fall and winter. Known to attack people in breeding season, they do not like too many strangers around. However, they do recognize individual humans, and once they become comfortable with you, they can get amazingly friendly.

January 11th. Sandhill cranes came at a trot to greet me as I came into sight.

The lady of the pair preferred not to be hand fed, although she did accept some treats

And posed for photos

#3 went for a flight while the other two sounded an alarm as some strangers approached....the were right to be upset at the intrusion, as the two men who came by us were very disrespectful, almost getting themselves attacked - by all of us

After this, another regular joined us and the cranes decided they would join us on our walk. This was a first for both of us humans, and #3 rejoined the troupe.
